Statement

I like to use a variety of sources in my work when it comes to imagery, materials, and processes. I pull representations from traditional catalogues of symbolism as well as from more modern and personal sources, including modern culture, dreams, and the natural world. I employ allegory through these images in order to communicate with the viewer. In order to create a desired effect, I mix found objects in with more traditional materials. For instance, a figure might contain a number of distorted and abstracted features composed of found objects, but might have other parts of it that are clearly detailed and crafted in ceramic. I will often mix very clean, modern, or valuable objects with water-damaged trash, bones, or materials with unpleasant textures. The use of clean and traditional materials might provide a grounding for the viewer while the inclusion of other materials simultaneously creates a sense of uneasiness through dissonance. Using a variety of materials necessitates the use of a variety of processes. Process is very important to me, and I constantly experiment with new methods. I tend to leave clues in pieces as to the methods that I used to create them. This feels honest to me.
